Apple Launches iPhone Duo, Its First Foldable, at $1,999
Apple launches iPhone Duo as its first foldable smartphone, opening a new premium tier for the company’s most important product. Unveiled on September 9, the passport-shaped device starts at $1,999 and is scheduled to reach customers on October 23.
Apple is entering a category already developed by Samsung, Google, Huawei and other rivals, but it is tying the new hardware closely to Apple Intelligence, multitasking and privacy. The launch establishes four key facts:
- A 7.6-inch internal display opens from a compact book-style body.
- The A20 Pro chip is built for more on-device AI processing.
- Apple Pencil support turns the unfolded screen into a work surface.
- Preorders begin October 16 before the October 23 release.
Apple Launches iPhone Duo at a $1,999 Starting Price
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s largest physical change to the iPhone since the company removed the home button from the iPhone X in 2017. When closed, it presents a smaller outer screen; opened horizontally, it becomes a wide display that can also be used vertically.
Apple described the open device as its thinnest phone. The compact, rounded design is intended to make a tablet-like workspace portable without requiring a separate iPad, while the hinge lets the phone stand partially open for hands-free viewing and other supported uses.
The $1,999 entry price places the Duo far above Apple’s conventional flagship phones. It starts with 256GB of storage, while higher-capacity configurations extend to 2TB, according to launch coverage. Apple will open preorders on October 16 and begin availability one week later.
The delayed release gives the Duo a different sales window from the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Those models start at $1,199 and $1,299, with preorders beginning September 12 and availability on September 18.
The 7.6-Inch Screen Brings Apple Pencil to iPhone
The defining feature is the 7.6-inch internal display, the largest screen Apple has put in an iPhone. The book-style layout supports split-screen multitasking, allowing two apps or related views to share the display instead of forcing users to move between full-screen phone interfaces.
Apple Pencil compatibility is another first for the iPhone family. It positions the Duo for handwriting, drawing and precise document work, while also narrowing the functional distance between an iPhone and the smaller iPad models.
The outer display keeps routine tasks available without opening the phone. That matters because foldables often make users choose between the convenience of a standard phone screen and the productivity of a larger internal panel; the Duo is designed to serve both patterns.
Apple’s engineering claims will face scrutiny after years of trade-offs across the foldable market. Hinges, screen creases, camera compromises, battery life and added weight have limited mainstream adoption even as competing devices became thinner and more durable.
Launch reporting describes a titanium frame, reinforced materials and IP68 dust and water resistance. Those specifications suggest Apple is emphasizing everyday durability, but independent testing will be needed to assess the hinge, long-term screen wear and repair costs.
A20 Pro and Apple Intelligence Define the Computing Strategy
The Duo uses Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, linking the foldable design to the company’s push for local AI. Apple says Apple Intelligence runs on the device whenever possible, keeping more personal data under the owner’s control instead of routinely sending it to a remote model.
That privacy argument was central to new chief executive John Ternus’s first major product event. Apple also introduced an updated Siri designed to work across 300,000 apps at release, according to the company, expanding the assistant’s reach beyond Apple’s own software.
A larger screen can make that software more useful. An assistant that retrieves information or takes an action in one app could leave the result visible beside a message, document or browser, reducing the context switching that makes complex phone workflows cumbersome.
The ordinary iPhone 18 Pro models also receive A20 Pro. Apple says the chip improves the ability to run advanced AI models locally, making on-device inference a shared platform strategy rather than a feature reserved for the foldable.
Apple additionally announced tools for distinguishing camera originals from AI-altered media. Its Apple Reference Image standard is intended to authenticate images captured by the iPhone 18 Pro, while the company will also support Google’s SynthID system for marking AI-created or edited imagery.
October Sales Will Test Apple’s Foldable Bet
Foldables remain a small part of the smartphone market despite years of product development. The category offers more screen space, but its higher prices and mechanical compromises have kept it from replacing conventional phones for most buyers.
Apple is betting that its scale, software ecosystem and retail reach can broaden that audience. The Duo also gives developers a new layout to target, potentially increasing demand for adaptable interfaces that move cleanly between the outer display, full internal screen and split-screen arrangements.
The release will test whether buyers treat the Duo as an expensive phone or as a combined phone-and-tablet purchase. Its starting price leaves little room for unresolved problems, especially around durability, battery endurance, app behavior and serviceability.
The most useful evidence will arrive after October 23, when customers and independent reviewers can assess the hardware beyond Apple’s controlled demonstrations. Early demand will reveal whether the company has opened a meaningful new iPhone segment or produced a specialist device for premium buyers.
