XPeng Robotics Raises Over $900 Million at $6.3 Billion Valuation for Humanoid IRON Platform



Chinese electric vehicle maker XPeng Inc. announced on August 24, 2026, that its robotics business has secured more than US$900 million in its first external funding round, valuing the unit at over US$6.3 billion post-money. The company described the raise as the largest single-round private financing recorded in China's embodied AI sector to date.

 

The round was led by IDG Capital, with participation from Gaorong Ventures and strategic investments from Tencent and Alibaba. XPeng will retain controlling ownership of the robotics business after the transaction closes, and the unit will continue to be consolidated in the group's financial statements.

 

Funding Details and Use of Proceeds

According to XPeng's official statement and a Hong Kong Stock Exchange filing, the robotics business entered into conditional share purchase agreements with multiple investors. 

 

XPeng's wholly owned subsidiary is contributing capital alongside external investors and executive subscribers. Gross proceeds are expected to exceed US$900 million, excluding potential additional amounts and warrant exercises.

 

The capital will support software and hardware research and development, training and iteration of Physical AI foundation models, high-quality data collection and generation, construction of end-to-end mass-production facilities, and global commercial expansion. 

 

The company has positioned the robotics unit as a core pillar of its broader Physical AI strategy, which also encompasses smart electric vehicles and robotaxis.

 

IRON Humanoid Robot Specifications

The funding centers on XPeng's next-generation IRON humanoid robot platform. Official materials describe IRON as featuring 76 degrees of freedom across the body and 21 degrees of freedom in each hand. 

 

It is powered by three proprietary Turing AI chips that deliver up to 2,250 TOPS of effective on-device computing power.

This compute capacity enables the robot to run XPeng's Physical AI foundation model locally, supporting autonomous task execution without continuous remote operation while prioritizing low-latency inference and data security. 

 

The hardware incorporates a proprietary fully enclosed flexible lattice structure intended to balance human-like appearance with safety, along with automotive-grade components drawn from XPeng's EV development experience.

 

Earlier public demonstrations of IRON prototypes, including at XPeng's 2025 AI Day, highlighted fluid walking, interaction capabilities, and a design standing approximately 1.78 meters tall and weighing around 70 kilograms in some versions. 

 

The company has emphasized automotive-grade quality standards, supply-chain leverage, and manufacturing expertise as advantages for scaling humanoid production.

 

Production Timeline and Commercial Plans

XPeng targets mass production of IRON by the end of 2026, with a stated goal of reaching monthly capacity exceeding 1,000 units. Initial deployments are planned for the company's own retail stores and industrial campuses. Commercial sales and deliveries in China and overseas markets are scheduled to begin in 2027.

 

CEO and Chairman He Xiaopeng assumed personal leadership of the robotics business earlier in 2026 to accelerate the push toward volume production. The company has broken ground on a dedicated robotics production facility in Guangzhou covering roughly 110,000 square meters, spanning research validation, trial production, and scaled manufacturing.

 

Longer-term ambitions referenced by company leadership include expanding annual production capacity significantly by 2030, though specific volume targets beyond near-term goals remain aspirational. 

 

Initial commercial focus is expected to center on structured service and industrial environments rather than unrestricted home use.

 

Investor Perspectives and Industry Context

IDG Capital stated that the embodied AI industry is transitioning from technical demonstrations toward scalable manufacturing and real-world deployment.

 

The firm highlighted XPeng's integrated stack spanning edge AI processors, foundation models, and complete robotic systems, along with synergies from its smart EV and autonomous driving businesses.

 

Gaorong Ventures noted that humanoid robots are moving beyond mobility and dexterity showcases toward reliable production and tangible value creation. 

 

It pointed to XPeng's anthropomorphic form factor, automotive-grade safety standards, and the potential for a production-data-model-deployment feedback loop as IRON enters real-world use.

 

The raise comes amid intensifying global interest in humanoid robotics and Physical AI. Automakers have increasingly entered the space, citing transferable expertise in sensors, software, batteries, perception systems, and large-scale manufacturing.

 

Previous large Chinese embodied AI financings, such as a US$455 million pre-A round for TARS Robotics earlier in 2026, had set interim records that this XPeng transaction has now surpassed.

 

XPeng dual-lists on the New York Stock Exchange (XPEV) and Hong Kong Stock Exchange (9868). The robotics financing establishes a distinct market valuation for the unit while providing dedicated capital channels for the capital-intensive path from prototype to commercial humanoid platforms.

 

As IRON approaches mass production, the combination of substantial funding, strategic investors with deep technology and consumer platforms, and XPeng's existing manufacturing footprint positions the company among the more advanced automaker-backed efforts to commercialize general-purpose humanoid robots. 

 

Market reception and real-world performance data from the planned 2026-2027 deployments will determine how quickly the platform scales beyond controlled environments.
